The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) of the European Commission have published opinions on the safety of three chemicals used in cosmetics and balloons:
– kojic acid (5-hydroxy-2-hydroxymethyl-4-pyrone)
– benzisothiazolinone
– nitosamines
The SCCS considers that benzisothiazolinone is safe for use as a preservative in cosmetic products at a concentration up to 0.01%. However, there is concern over its sensitising potential, which could lead to skin reactions.
The deadline for comments on these opinions to SCCS is 24 August.
