In June of this year, the Danish authorities proposed a restriction under REACH of four classified phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP, and DIBP) in articles. ECHA turned this proposal down, with both the Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) and the ECHA Committee for Socio-economic Analysis (SEAC) deciding against the Danes.
A group of 9 non-Government Organisations (NGOs) are now lobbying the European Commission to ban these phthalates to safeguard human health according to the precautionary principle. The letter sent to the Commission also calls for more urgent action to deal with the risk associated with combinations of chemicals to humans and the wider environment.
