The European Commission’s DG Sanco have asked EFSA, the European Food Safety Administration, to conduct a study to supply their scientific opinion on endocrine disruptors and their impact on human health and environmental risks. There is already a study commissioned by DG Environment to develop criteria on the identification of endocrine disruptors, to be used horizontally across all EU regulation, something which is needed as the term “endocrine disrupter” currently has no legal standing within the EU.
Endocrine disrupters can be defined as substances which may behave similarly to human hormones or influence the hormone levels in the body and thereby have effects on human health and organisms in the environment, particularly at critical stages of development.
