The German authorities have submitted their intention to add the following substances to the candidate list for Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) under REACH:

  • benzo[def]chrysene (also known as benzo[a]pyrene)
  • all substances that contain benzo[a]pyrene at a concentration equal to or greater than 0.01 % by weight

Benzo[def]chrysene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, found in coal tar, and has many industrial applications. It is also a widespread pollutant in air (mainly from fuel exhausts), water and soil. Determination of this compound is usually carried out by GC-MS or LC-MS.
