The European Commission has published a recommendation (2013/711/EU) concerning a proposal to reduce the presence of dioxins, furans and PCBs in feed and food.
Concern regarding the levels of these contaminants centres on free-range eggs, organic eggs, lamb and sheep liver, Chinese mitten crab, dried herbs and clays as food supplements. The Commission recommends that these are subject to an increased level of monitoring.
The measurement of dioxins, furans and PCBs in foods and feeds is not a straightforward task, and the number of laboratories in Europe with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for these measurements is relatively small.
