The European Commission has published Commission Regulation 474/2014 which amends Annex XVII to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (‘REACH’).
This new Regulation restricts the placing on the market, or use of, air fresheners or deodorisers in toilets, homes, offices or other indoor public areas, which contain 1,4-dichlorobenzene (CAS No 106-46-7, EC No 203-400-5) at a concentration equal to or greater than 1 % by weight.
This new restriction takes effect from 1 June 2015 to allow manufacturers and suppliers to taker appropriate action to remove or reduce the levels of 1,4-dichlorobenzene in these products. Manufacturers, traders and enforcement laboratories will need to be able to measure accurately and reliably 1,4-dichlorobenzene in these products in order to effectively enforce this Regulation.
